What is Honda Sensing™?
What is Honda Sensing™?
With the recent publicity around the new 2016 Honda Civic Sedan being named a 2016 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ and winning the 2016 North American Car of the Year award, you’ve probably heard the term Honda Sensing™ at least once. After all, this driver-assistive technology is what propelled the Civic Sedan to earn a top SUPERIOR rating for frontal crash protection by the IIHS. But what is the Honda Sensing™ ? In basic terms, it’s a “suite” composed of these innovative safety technologies: Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow.
Individually, these features are impressive enough, but together, they form a synergy that makes the 2016 Honda Civic Sedan one of the safest and most intuitive vehicles on the road today. (Bonus: the Honda Sensing™ Advanced Safety and Driver-Assistive Technologies are either available or standard on every 2016 Honda Civic Sedan trim level).
Collision Mitigation Braking System with Forward Collision Warning (FCW) – This system continuously monitors the road and if it detects a crash is about to occur, will audibly alert the driver. If the driver does not respond in time, the system will apply the brakes automatically in order to avoid a collision or reduce impact.
Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) – This system is fantastic for long road trips and highway driving. It boosts driver confidence by utilizing a camera mounted on the windshield to keep an unblinking eye on detected lane markings. To keep you on the straightaway, it will apply corrective steering if it senses that your Honda is veering off course.
Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW) – These systems work in tandem to first audibly alert the driver if they are veering off the side of the road, and to then apply autonomous steering to move the vehicle safely back into the center of the lane if necessary. This system will even apply automatic breaking to keep the vehicle from deviating from its path.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow – Another lifesaver for those lengthy highway jaunts. Just set the cruise control speed, and your 2016 Honda Civic will automatically adjust its pace to maintain a set following interval in relation to the vehicle in front of you. If the vehicle in front of you comes to a complete stop, your Honda will automatically brake to a full stop. When you are ready to roll again, simply press the Cruise Control button to resume.
