The 2016 Honda Pilot – What’s New?
The 2016 Honda Pilot – What’s New?
Sometimes “all-new” means just a few tweaks and minor upgrades, but that’s not the case for the 2016 Honda Pilot. This 3rd generation Pilot has been completely restyled on the inside, the outside, and everything in between. Better style, more interior space, more features and improved handling are just a few of the enhancements that the truly “all-new” 2016 Honda Pilot has to offer.
The driver of the 2016 Honda Pilot will enjoy an interior with a more welcoming and open appeal. This feeling starts at the dash, which now sports softer, more flowing and symmetrical lines, a larger screen and better-quality materials (you can see the difference in the comparison photos, below).

Storage and utility were not compromised, as the 2016 Pilot offers a large forward stowage bin, a spacious center console bin with a roll-away lid (that is even big enough to hold a small purse or tablet), and 16 cup holders, so you and your passengers will never get thirsty. The 2016 Honda Pilot gained 3.5 inches in length, 1.8 inches on the wheelbase and lost 1.4 inches on the rear floor. This adds up to more interior spaciousness overall.
The 2016 Pilot is lighter, sleeker, and more powerful and fuel efficient than its predecessor. It lost almost 300 pounds, and every trim level comes with a jaunty 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 280 horsepower and 262 lbs/ft of torque. Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) enhances fuel efficiency by providing full 6-cylinder power when needed (such as during acceleration) and switching to 3-cylinder mode when lower engine power is required. Engine mounts minimize engine vibration to nearly imperceptible levels, so you get all of the punch you’d expect from a V-6 engine with improved gas mileage and smooth transitions. Honda estimates MPG for the 2016 Pilot at 19 city/27 highway* with front wheel drive.
The new 6-speed automatic transmission offers smooth acceleration, as does the (also new) 9-speed transmission available on the Touring and Elite trims. The 9-speed transmission performance is further enhanced by Grade Logic Control, Shift Hold Control and Cornering G Control.
Should you opt for the all-wheel drive (aka iVTM4 – intelligent Variable Torque Management), you’ll enjoy superior handling thanks to “torque vectoring.” This technology gets specific by channeling power between the rear left and right wheels for enhanced turning precision. For you off-roaders out there, a new Intelligent Traction Management system allows you to play in four modes; (Normal, Snow, Mud and Sand), and adjusts accordingly so you can get yourself out of just about any slippery situation.
New Fun Features:
2nd row captain’s chairs and a panoramic sunroof are just a few of the notable new features available on the 2016 Honda Pilot. Updated “next generation” XM Satellite Radio has a few new tricks up its sleeve – it records the songs playing in your current preset radio stations and mixes them up so you can enjoy a Pandora®-like listening experience. Remote ignition goes beyond the basics by detecting the internal temperature and adjusting the interior climate accordingly. And, so everyone can charge their iPads, phones and the like, the 2016 Pilot features five USB ports.
2016 Honda Pilot Safety:
The new Pilot will introduce the most complete set of safety and driver-assistive technologies ever offered in a Honda. These features amalgamate to create the Honda Sensing™ suite, which could be described as an extension of the drivers’ senses. This technology is designed to enhance situational awareness, and even react for the driver if necessary by applying emergency breaking. Standard safety and driver-assistive features include four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Brake Assist and Hill Start Assist; Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control; driver and front passenger SmartVent™ side airbags and side-curtain airbags for all outboard seating positions; an Expanded View Driver’s Mirror; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, plus an updated Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with real-time display of each tire’s pressure. The Elite trim level features rear cross-traffic monitor and a blind-spot warning system.
