CR-V Named Motor Trend 2018 SUV of the Year

The 5th generation 2018 Honda CR-V rose to the top of the SUV echelon for the 2nd time. It was recently named Motor Trend’s 2018 SUV of the Year. (You may remember that the refreshed 2015 CR-V also earned the same accolade).  The CR-V underwent an extensive redesign in model year 2017, and this iteration has truly impressed Motor Trend’s evaluators once again. Slated against some serious competition (over 20 contenders, including the Nissan GT-R, Tesla Model S, Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the Volvo XC60), the CR-V won due to its “…supreme example of calm, confident composure that delivers in all categories”. Let’s talk about how the CR-V won over the judges in these categories:

Design

This CR-V is larger than its predecessor, offers more refinement and technology, and processes an appealing understated elegance in its design. Ultimately, the Motor Trend evaluators love that “ the CR-V is mercifully free of the riotous mess of lines and surfaces that blights the sheetmetal of some contemporary Japanese crossovers, relying instead on bolder graphic elements such as the grille and taillights to establish its identity.”

Interior

Inside the CR-V, the judges loved its roominess, functionality, versatility and ease of use. These days some automotive technology can feel overcomplicated, but the CR-V offers an intuitive infotainment screen plus simple to use audio and climate controls. They also noted its ample front storage space and class-leading 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space (with rear seats up), and 60/40 split rear seat.

Engineering

This newest iteration of the CR-V is a truly clever creation. Although it gained length, height and width, it somehow lost 113 pounds. This slimming down has improved handling and efficiency versus the previous model. Two continuously variable transmission (CVT) engines are now available; a base level 2.4-liter 184-hp and a 1.5-liter turbocharged. The latter is new for the EX, EX-L and Touring trims of the CR-V, and pumps out an impressive 190-hp and 179 lb-ft of torque. The excellent steering and chassis design translate to supreme surefootedness on the road. On the high-speed oval of the test course, the “…CR-V planted stable at 115 mph-not that you’ll ever need to go that fast, but it’s an excellent measure of chassis engineering.”

Safety

The 2018 CR-V gets active and passive safety right. Preventative “active” safety, like the Honda Sensing® suite, comes standard on all CR-V EX and above trim levels. This suite combines a host of driver assistive technologies (lane keeping assist, active cruise control and collision prevention) to keep an unwavering eye on the road, and help prevent a collision from even happening.  “Passive” safety helps protect you if a collision does occur. Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) Body Structure, SmartVent® Front Side Airbags and Side Curtain Airbags with Rollover Sensor all keep the award-winning CR-V’s passengers and safe and sound as possible in the unfortunate event of a collision.

Value

Hondas are well known for their upfront and retained value, and the CR-V is no exception. The Motor Trend’s judges lauded the 2018 Honda CR-V for its starting price and base model standard equipment. The 2018 Honda CR-V LX AWD CVT has an MSRP of just $25,550* and offers a host of standard features such as Automatic Climate Control, Back-Up Camera, Bluetooth®, Pandora® Compatibility, Hill Start Assist and more.  Motor Trend’s editor-in-chief Ed Loh concludes the evaluation perfectly:  “Overall, it’s the best in one of the toughest classes around,…. That’s saying something.”

The 2018 CR-V has been named Motors Trend’s SUV of the Year® thanks to impressive cargo space, efficient fuel economy and Honda Sensing® safety and driver-assistive technology standard on EX and higher models. *MSRP excluding tax, license, registration, $975.00 destination charge and options.
