2017 Honda Civic Type R Sets New Nürburgring Speed Benchmark

The 2017 Honda Civic Type R was just a dream to us a few months ago. Even after it made its U.S. debut on November 1st in prototype mode, we could do little more than marvel at its aggressive styling and imagine slaying the open road with its 2.0 liter VTEC® TURBO engine. Now that the new Civic Type R recently claimed the title of world’s fastest production front-wheel-drive production car, we no longer have to imagine its miraculous performance. We just have to wait for it.   A few weeks ago, on April 3rd, the new 2017 Honda Civic Type R made history by lapping the 12.9 mile Nordschleife (north loop) in a record 7 minutes 43.80 seconds. That’s almost 7 seconds faster than its predecessor, the European market Type R. You can watch the stunning footage yourself here on this Honda YouTube Video:

What makes the new Honda Civic Type R a speed and performance powerhouse? It’s not one attribute, but a synergy of engineering intelligence. The 2.0-liter VTEC TURBO engine generates an astounding 306 horsepower1 and 295 lb.-ft. of torque2 making it the most powerful Honda currently sold in America. The lower gear ratios built into its six-speed manual transmission makes for superb acceleration. The Type R’s aerodynamic exterior is designed to create the optimal combination of stability and drag.

The lead chassis engineer for the new Honda Civic Type R, Ryuichi Kijima, describes in more detail the improvements in this generation versus the previous:

“The cornering speed achieved in the new Type R is higher because the car features a wider track and tires, a longer wheelbase, a new multi-link suspension in the rear and optimized aerodynamics that improve stability. For example, drivers typically enter the corner after Metzgesfeld at around 150 km/h (93 mph). Even at this medium-speed corner, the speed is around 10 km/h (6 mph) higher due to the new Type R’s excellent stability. So, with improved cornering performance, we can increase the speed throughout the lap, helping the new Type R to achieve a much quicker lap time.”

Concerned that the lap speed was achieved with vehicle enhancements? Don’t be. While a floating roll cage was utilized for safety, the Display Audio System and rear seats were removed to compensate for the added weight. Also, the roll cage did not improve the rigidity of the body frame. “Street legal, track-focused” tires were used as well.

Can’t wait to drive it? Neither can we. Luckily, in less than two months, the highly anticipated 2017 Honda Civic Type R will hit our lot.  Contact us at Keenan Honda in Doylestown PA to reserve yours today!
